What Is Trapunto Monogramming?
Trapunto (pronounced trə-pŏŏn′-tō) takes its name from the Italian word for "quilted." It's a centuries-old technique in which a design is stitched into fabric and then padded from behind, so the pattern lifts into relief rather than sitting flat on the surface.
Italian quilters have used it since at least the Renaissance, most famously on the Sicilian bed coverings that survive in museum collections today. We've adapted it for leather.
Our Trapunto monogramming lifts your initials up from the leather, then sews them down to secure the monogram in place. The result is dimensional, tactile, and impossible to reproduce with a stamp or a press — each one is a little different, because each one is made by hand.
How Trapunto Leather Monogramming Is Made
Most personalization is applied to a finished product. Trapunto works in reverse.
Two Trapunto Letter Sizes
Trapunto began on our largest styles, where big, striking letters have room to make a statement. We now offer a smaller letter size as well — equally bold, scaled for our more compact leather accessories.
That means you can get the Trapunto look on pieces like the Portable Wristlet Round Pouch and the Petite Dumpling Pouch, not just on totes and weekenders.
What "Made To Order" Means
Every Trapunto piece is made after you place your order. Nothing is pulled from a shelf and personalized after the fact.
This has two consequences worth knowing up front. First, it takes longer than debossing or hand painting — there's no finished item waiting, so we're building yours from raw hide. Second, availability depends on our leather stock: we can only offer Trapunto in a given color and style when we have enough hide on hand to cut the piece from scratch.
The tradeoff is a genuinely one-of-a-kind product, made in a way that very few leather brands offer at all.
Three Steps, One Signature
Designed, sculpted, and assembled by hand — so your initials are part of the leather, not applied to it.
Step 1: Design
Once you submit your order, our team will review your monogram to ensure letter spacing is ideal for the product selected and then approve monogram for the next step of production.
Step 2: Production
Your letters will be lifted up from the leather using our special quilting technique. From there, the monogram is glued and stitched down. Once your monogram is complete, our team constructs your bag into the final product.
Step 3: Delivery
The additional processing and production time to create your masterpiece is well worth the wait. From our facility in China, your product is carefully packaged in our signature boxes, and then shipped to your door.
