Personalization FAQs
Leatherology offers several ways to personalize your item with initials, names, or custom artwork. Available options include Debossing (Serif, Sans, Block), Script, Hand Paint, Trapunto, AI Designer, and Custom Artwork/Logo. Not all options are available on every product. To see what's offered for a specific style, go to the product page and click Personalize.
All personalization is applied left to right, exactly as entered, with letters in equal size.
General
Which products can be personalized?
Most Leatherology products can be personalized, though the available options vary by style and leather.
Browse Wallets & Card Cases, Bags & Totes, Tech & Travel, Desk & Office, and Small Leather Goods. On any product page, click Personalize to see which techniques are offered for that style, along with fonts, placement, and pricing.
Debossing is available on the widest range of products. Script, Hand Paint, and Trapunto are offered on select leathers and styles.
How long does personalization take to ship?
Debossing (Serif, Sans, Block) and Script typically ship with no additional processing time when the item is in stock and outside peak holiday periods.
Hand Paint, Trapunto, AI Designer, and Custom Artwork are made to order and require additional processing time. Trapunto takes the longest, since your initials are created before the piece is constructed.
For your exact delivery estimate, enter your shipping address at checkout. Because processing times shift seasonally, checkout is the most accurate source. We'd rather show you a real date than a general range.
How much does personalization cost?
Cost depends on the personalization type, the item, and the placement you choose. Debossing is our most accessible option; Hand Paint, Trapunto, and Custom Artwork involve more hands-on work and are priced accordingly.
The personalization previewer shows your exact cost before you add to cart. Select a style and placement and the price updates with it, so there's nothing to calculate and no surprises at checkout.
Do you offer monogramming?
Yes. If you'd like your initials pressed into the leather, that's our debossing, which most people call monogramming.
The one thing to know is how the letters are arranged. We apply personalization left to right, exactly as you enter it, with every letter the same size. We don't offer traditional monogram formatting, where the last-name initial is enlarged and centered between a smaller first and middle initial.
So for Anna Rose Bennett, entering ARB gives you three equal-sized letters in that order, not the classic A B R with a larger B in the middle.
How well does personalization hold up over time?
Debossing is pressed into the leather itself, so it doesn't wear off. The impression softens and deepens as the leather ages. Foil Deboss may show gentle wear at high-contact points over many years, which most people find adds to the character of the piece.
Hand Paint uses a specially formulated leather paint that flexes with the leather, and Trapunto is stitched in place, so both are built for daily use.
To keep any personalization looking its best, avoid extended exposure to extreme heat and moisture.
Why can't I add more letters?
Our team determines the optimal character count for each style based on the maximum number of letters that can fit while still looking great and delivering high quality results. Some styles offer extended character counts, allowing for full names or short phrases.
Character limits vary by personalization type, item, and the size of the area being personalized. The previewer shows your available character count as soon as you select a style, and will stop you before you exceed it.
Can I choose a different placement for my personalization?
We have pre-selected an optimal placement for all products. For select styles, alternate placement options are available and will be shown in the personalization previewer.
Debossing
What is debossing? Is it the same as hot stamping, engraving, or embossing?
Debossing, sometimes called hot stamping, presses your initials or text down into the leather surface using metal dies, creating a clean impression that ages beautifully over time. You may also hear it referred to as engraving. While not technically the same process, the result is similar. It is different from embossing, which pushes the design up above the surface rather than into it. Leatherology uses debossing only.
What fonts are available for debossing?
We offer Serif, Sans, and Block font styles for standard debossing. Each is pressed into the leather using heated metal dies.
What is Blind Deboss?
Blind Deboss is without any added color or foil. The result will either match the leather color or burnish slightly darker from the heat of the stamp.
What is Foil Deboss?
Foil Deboss layers a foil over the leather during stamping, giving your deboss a metallic finish. Available foil options include 22K gold, rose gold, silver, and black.
Script
What is Script?
Script is a deboss technique where your initials or text are hand-traced onto the leather using a heated pen, giving each piece a fluid, handcrafted quality that sets it apart from standard die-pressed debossing. Script is available on select leathers only. To see if Script is available for a specific style, navigate to the product page and click Personalize.
Hand Paint
What is Hand Paint?
Hand Paint is a bespoke personalization experience where every piece is painted by hand. Our artisans use an intensive process to create one-of-a-kind wearable art that is durable enough for daily use. To see if Hand Paint is available for a specific style, navigate to the product page and click Personalize.
What paint is used?
We use a specially formulated leather paint that flexes with the leather once dry, moving naturally with your product over time. You should not experience paint cracking; however, to preserve the quality of your personalization, keep it away from extreme heat and moisture.
Trapunto
What is Trapunto?
Trapunto (trə pŏŏn′tō) is a modern take on an old-world quilting technique that lifts your initials up from the leather, then stitches them down to secure the personalization in place, creating a unique raised effect unlike any other personalization we offer. Trapunto is a personalization-first technique, meaning your initials are created before the item is even constructed, resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind piece.
What styles are available with Trapunto?
Each Trapunto piece is made to order from scratch, so we can only offer it when we have sufficient leather hides in stock. This is why availability varies by color and style. To see if Trapunto is available for your selection, navigate to the product page and click Personalize.
AI Designer & Custom Artwork
What are AI Designer and Custom Artwork?
AI Designer and Custom Artwork are two ways to deboss a custom image onto your item, going beyond initials or text.
- AI Designer — Use our AI image generator to create a custom design, which is then used to create a die and debossed directly onto the leather.
- Custom Artwork — Upload your own artwork (logo, drawing), which we use to create a die and deboss onto the leather.
Corporate Orders
Do you offer corporate or bulk personalization?
Yes. We deboss custom logos and artwork for corporate gifting, client gifts, and employee recognition, with no minimum order quantity. Volume discounts begin at a minimum order value; our corporate team will walk you through tiers, lead times, and artwork setup.
Returns & Order Issues
Can personalized items be returned or exchanged?
Personalized items are final sale and can't be returned or exchanged. Because each piece is made specifically for you, we're unable to resell it. Please double-check your initials, font, and placement in the personalization previewer before adding to cart. The preview shows exactly what will be applied, letter for letter.
Non-personalized items follow our standard return policy. Returns & Exchanges
What if my personalization arrives incorrect or damaged?
We'll make it right. If a personalized item arrives damaged, or with the wrong initials, font, color, or size due to an error on our end, contact us with your order number and a photo. Depending on the issue, we'll arrange a replacement, refund, exchange, or store credit.
